How to read a Minesweeper board like a constraint problem, and when a "guess" is actually the higher-percentage play.
Most Minesweeper losses are not bad luck — they are unsolved arithmetic. Every revealed number is a constraint, and a board is usually solvable without guessing if you use all of them.
Count the satisfied constraints first
Start with any number whose adjacent covered cells equal its value minus the flags you already placed. Those cells are safe. The instinct to click the lowest number first is right: low numbers have the fewest ways to be satisfied, so they resolve fastest.
1-1 patterns and 1-2 patterns
A "1" next to a "1" with one shared covered cell means that shared cell is safe (the first 1 is already satisfied by its other neighbour). A "1-2" pair with a shared cell means the shared cell is a mine. These two patterns alone clear most early boards.
When you must guess, guess the biggest region
Some boards force a guess. Pick the covered cell that belongs to the largest unresolved region, because a wrong guess there leaves the most board still in play. Flip a coin on a single isolated square and you lose the whole board on a 50/50.
FAQ
Does PlayJoy guarantee a first click opens an area?
Yes — the first click is always safe, and we never place a mine under or beside it.
Why did my run get marked unranked?
If you switched tabs mid-run the server flags it; stay on the puzzle so the daily board stays fair.
