Sudoku is the purest logic puzzle ever printed. Nine rows, nine columns, nine boxes, and one rule: every digit from 1 to 9 appears exactly once in each. There is no guessing required, no arithmetic, and no language barrier — which is exactly why it became a global habit.

On PlayJoy the daily Sudoku is generated fresh every night at midnight UTC from a seeded algorithm. Everyone in the world receives the same grid, digs through the same 27 constraints, and lands on the same leaderboard. Three levels run back to back: a gentle 40-clue warm-up, a 33-clue standard board, and a 27-clue board that will make you slow down and think.

How the daily Sudoku is generated

We build a complete, valid grid first using a backtracking fill with shuffled candidate ordering, then remove clues one at a time. After every removal the solver counts solutions and stops at two — if a second solution appears, the clue goes back. That guarantees something most casual Sudoku sites cannot promise: every PlayJoy board has exactly one answer.

The seed is derived from the date, the game and the level, so the puzzle is reproducible but not predictable. You cannot mine tomorrow's grid from today's.

Techniques that actually move your score

Start with scanning, not with candidates. Run each digit 1 through 9 across the three boxes that cover a given row; when a digit can only sit in one cell of that row, place it. This single technique clears most easy boards without any pencil marks.

Move to pencil marks only when scanning stalls. Mark pairs in a box first — a naked pair in a box eliminates those two digits from every other cell in that box, which usually unlocks a row or column elsewhere.

Watch for pointing pairs. If a candidate digit inside a box is confined to one row, that digit cannot appear anywhere else in that row outside the box. It is the fastest way to break a stubborn medium board.

Why Sudoku scores on the leaderboard feel fair

Score is difficulty multiplied by a time constant, divided by elapsed seconds and by a penalty for each conflicting entry. Speed matters, but a mistake costs more than three wasted seconds, so the board rewards the players who slow down just enough to be right.

How Sudoku is scored

score = (difficulty × 12) ÷ seconds ÷ (1 + 0.35 × mistakes)

Frequently asked questions

Is the PlayJoy daily Sudoku free?

Yes. Every daily puzzle is free with no account and no download. PlayJoy Pro adds archive replay and extra stats, but never gates today's puzzle.

Does every player get the same Sudoku?

Yes. The grid is generated from the UTC date, so a player in London and a player in Los Angeles open identical boards.

How many mistakes am I allowed?

Unlimited. A conflicting digit is highlighted in red and counted as a mistake, which reduces your score, but it never ends the run.

Can I play Sudoku without waiting for tomorrow?

Yes. Open the Sudoku game page for unlimited practice boards that are generated on demand.
